Orion was contracted by BWC Terminals (previously known as Contanda) to support the construction of liquid storage facilities at a new terminal under development in Houston, Texas. Orion constructed a total of 10 tank foundations for hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, acids, base oils, biodiesel, ethanol, and glycols. Orion's responsibilities included site preparation; demolition of the existing foundation; and installing foundations with High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners, leak detection, and cathodic protection, showcasing our expertise in liquid storage facility construction.
BWC Terminals, previously known as Contanda, enlisted Orion to contribute to the construction of liquid storage facilities in a new terminal situated in Houston, Texas. This ambitious endeavor involved the creation of 10 tank foundations adhering to API 650 standards, boasting a collective storage capacity of 210,000 barrels (bbl). These foundations were designed to accommodate a diverse range of substances, including hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, acids, base oils, biodiesel, ethanol, and glycols.
The site of the new terminal was once occupied by a rebar and metal storage facility. Orion's responsibilities extended beyond the construction phase to include the demolition and removal of the pre-existing concrete foundation. Grading and site preparation were integral components of the project, allowing for seamless integration of the new tanks and associated infrastructure into the revamped space.
To meet the varied storage needs, Orion installed six foundations measuring 55 feet and 6 inches to support 25,000-bbl capacity tanks, along with four foundations at 44 feet and 6 inches for 15,000-bbl capacity tanks. Each ringwall foundation, approximately 5 feet deep and 2 feet thick, was placed on a concrete subgrade base, encircled by structural compacted fill. These foundations were fortified with 40mil High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners, leak detection systems, and cathodic protection.
