In 2017, BVIPA hired Orion to assess Tortola Cruise Pier post-Hurricanes Maria and Irma. Swift inspection revealed minimal damage, with a lost walkway. Our engineers followed ASCE standards, inspecting above and underwater structures. A detailed report with mitigation recommendations was promptly submitted, enabling the pier's reopening to passengers in November.
In September 2017, the British Virgin Island Port Authority (BVIPA) enlisted our Engineering & Consulting team to evaluate and document the impact of Hurricanes Maria and Irma on the Tortola Cruise Pier. This Category 5 hurricane-induced damage necessitated the redirection of cruise ships planning to dock, prompting a swift mobilization by our team. Within three weeks, Orion’s engineers conducted a meticulous visual inspection of above-water structures, adhering to American Society of Civil Engineers standards. The assessment covered diverse elements, including pile caps, mooring bollards, fender systems, dolphins, access infrastructure, and structural support members.
The inspection revealed minimal damage to the pier, except for the loss of a walkway. Following the prompt replacement of the walkway, the pier was declared safe for docking, facilitating its readiness to welcome passengers by November 2017. Our efforts ensured a speedy turnaround, allowing the resumption of cruise operations.
Underwater inspections were comprehensive, involving both land and dive boat assessments. Orion’s engineers scrutinized submerged components such as pile caps, mooring bollards, and related structures. The findings were documented in a detailed report, signed and sealed by a professional engineer. This report, submitted to BVIPA, not only cataloged the observations but also included mitigation recommendations to address the identified damages. The collaborative and efficient efforts of our team contributed to the successful reopening of the Tortola Cruise Pier, ensuring its operational safety and readiness for passenger traffic.
