Golden Pass LNG Flood Gate Design

With steel pipe pile-supported foundations, this Golden Pass LNG Flood Gate design included 30ft and 60ft gates, steel sheet piles as a protective curtain, and an anchored bulkhead wall linking to the new levee. Overcoming challenges like downdrag forces, a redesign was executed. Our Engineering & Consulting team also provided construction services, ensuring successful implementation despite changing conditions through effective communication with the contractor.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Design of steel pipe pile-supported concrete foundations
  • Installation of 30ft and 60ft flood gates at two locations
  • Design of steel sheet pile as a water-piping preventive "curtain"
  • Anchored bulkhead wall to link floodgate and new levee
  • Addressing downdrag forces and soil settlement challenges
  • Full redesign to accommodate anticipated effects
  • Construction services for submittal and RFI reviews
  • Multiple design modifications to adapt to changing conditions

Redesign Solutions: Overcoming Challenges

Orion’s Engineering & Consulting team played a pivotal role in the Golden Pass LNG facility project in Sabine Pass, Texas, providing comprehensive 100% design services for the installation of new floodgates. The design included the creation of steel pipe pile-supported concrete foundations at two distinct locations, accommodating flood gates of 30ft and 60ft dimensions, respectively.

At each foundation site, a crucial element was the design of steel sheet piles, strategically serving as a "curtain" to prevent water piping under the foundation into the facility. Additionally, an anchored bulkhead wall was designed beyond the foundation's boundaries to effectively "close the gap" between the floodgate and the concurrently constructed new levee system surrounding the facility.

One of the prominent challenges encountered during the project was the significant downdrag forces resulting from anticipated soil settlement. This posed a complex issue necessitating a comprehensive redesign of the initially proposed system to effectively address and mitigate these forces.

In addition to design services, we actively contributed to the construction phase, offering crucial support through submittal and request for information (RFI) reviews. The dynamic nature of the project led to multiple design modifications to adapt to changing conditions. However, the effective communication and collaboration between Orion and the contractor played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful implementation of the floodgate project at the Golden Pass LNG facility.
