Innovative Underwater Inspection Approach

Argos USA LLC (Argos) engaged Orion Engineering & Consulting to conduct a comprehensive inspection, assessment, and documentation of the condition of their waterfront structures in Tampa. The primary objective was to prepare for future repairs, and the scope included engineering recommendations and cost estimates integrated into the reporting process.

Our engineers executed a visual and tactile inspection, adhering to the American Society of Civil Engineers Underwater Inspection Standards. The various structures examined encompassed pile caps, mooring bollards, fender systems, dolphins, access ladders, gangways, handrails, and structural support members. The inspections were conducted both from land and dive boats, with an innovative approach allowing our team to observe the underwater phase in real-time. Helmets worn by divers transmitted live footage to a surface trailer, facilitating immediate observation, inquiry, and reporting, ensuring a thorough inspection process.

Following the inspections, we compiled a comprehensive written report that cataloged and summarized the findings. The report, signed and sealed by a professional engineer, not only documented the existing conditions but also provided valuable recommendations for mitigating the identified damages. This collaborative effort between Orion and Argos aimed to enhance the longevity and resilience of the Tampa waterfront structures.
